Save time by opening several predefined browser tabs at once

Posted on | June 25, 2007

Hey guys,

Just found an interesting little time saver if you regularly check multiple websites when you open your browser.  In IE 7 or in Firefox you can open multiple URL’s in separate tabs using the default home page feature.  If you regularly check certain websites and have to drill down several levels to various pages, this could really save you some valuable time.

In Firefox, go to ToolsàOptionsà and on the Main tab is your box for “Home Page”.  You can enter multiple URLs on this line separating each one with a “pipe”, the key that looks like this |, which is over your \, back slash key.  So in Firefox, you could enter:

www.google.com|www.netwavesolutions.com\stats|www.netwavemarketing.com|www.cnn.com

And this would open all three sites in three tabs at once.  If you regularly multiple sites each time you log in, like myspace, stats on your website, gmail, forums, cnn or whatever, just put all these URLs in this box and you’ve saved yourself some time opening them all.

In IE 7.0 and higher, you can do the same thing but the syntax is a little different.  When you get to the box for “Home Page”, you’ll notice it now has multiple lines.  You can enter each URL and press carriage return or enter after entering each one so they end up on separate lines.  Make sure NOT to include http:// as IE 7 will try and add it automatically.  If you have it in your URL, this process will not work so just remove it when entering your sites, thus starting with www.

Now there is also a way to get multiple bookmarks to open at once even after you have already loaded your web browser.  It works with both IE and Firefox.  Its not hard and pretty intuitive if you want to try and figure it out.  If you want to know how to open multiple URLs in different tabs without altering your default home page setting, just email me and I’ll hit you back with the step by step.  Be sure and tell me which browser you are using.  I will try and post that part soon here on my blog.

If you have any trouble getting any of this to work, just email and let me see if I can help.

Ridin’ the wave,

Sam
